This current gaming generation is coming to its midway point. By now gamers are comfortable with the hardware that’s available and they’re looking to the future for the next big thing. Developers are working hard to produce a game that can be considered the peak of this generation. So during this time the big conversation becomes “what’s next in gaming?”
During the last generation of systems, Microsoft introduced LIVE and in
this generation everyone stepped up. Nintendo brought a ton of online
features to the Wii, as did Sony with the PS3. In this generation
Nintendo revolutionized the way we play with the Wiimote, but Sony and
Microsoft are going to compete with this in the current generation.
Sony is introducing its own motion controller and Microsoft is
releasing Project Natal. So what will the next generation have to offer
the world?
Right now the sky is the limit for next generation systems features. However, one aspect of this current hardware cycle has taken over gaming and is set to be the new standard feature for gaming systems in the next gen. This current aspect of gaming is simply Netflix. This service has become the must have for every system and most gamers. The Xbox 360 has it and uses the service very well, the PS3 just got it and as soon as some kinks are knocked out it’ll be great, plus the Wii is also getting the service in the near future. Gamers have made their voices heard and they all want Netflix. With all this momentum behind the service it would be insane for a system makers not to try to include it into their new hardware. So what does this mean for gamers? Not much since the service is slowly making its way onto the Wii and it’s already available on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if Microsoft or Sony turns around and attempts to go out on their own and start their own Netflix like service. Both system makers currently have high priced rental on demand services, but lack the affordability of Netflix. Until that happens it looks like every system will add Netflix onto their must have list. I suggest you add it to yours. |
