Back in 2007 when BioWare released the first Mass Effect HDTV’s weren’t
as prevalent as they are today. At the time the digital switchover
hadn’t even happened yet. Game makers had to keep this in-mind when
creating games. They had to make sure the games looked good on both
HDTV and SDTV. Shortly after the release of the first Mass Effect many
SDTV owners cried that the game’s subtitle font was too small and
didn’t display properly on their TVs. BioWare worked quickly to create
a fix for this problem.
Fast forward 2 years and change and
Bioware is under fire again for the same issue with Mass Effect 2.
However, this time around BioWare isn’t as concerned. In a recent
message board post Michael Gamble from BioWare set the record straight
by saying “After investigating potential solutions, we have determined
that while this issue does affect a small portion of SDTV owners, we
are unable to resolve it for Mass Effect 2 through a title update.
However, we have taken note of this issue and will take it into
consideration as we plan future games in the Mass Effect franchise.”
This
may not sound like a big deal to most gamers with up to date TVs but
this is the first moment in gaming where a game is forcing people to
update their hardware. While some people might be offended about this
turn of events, I’m happy someone is finally taking charge and not
degrading their work to appease those not willing to get with the
times.
