Welcome back to the land of
homestarrunner.com. Over the last few months Strong Bad and his hi-jinks has
stormed the Wii and PC with amazing success. This time the masked prankster is back to repair his
video game console on an epic scale.
Yet after three episodes, is this series
getting a little old? Has this game run its course or is it just as good as the
first episode? I may not be able to give an answer, but I think it's an
important question that needed to be asked of an episodic game that's packed
with so much content. ![]()
At the opening of the episode, Strong Bad sits down to give an old game on his
fun box a spin. To the dismay of Strong Bad, his console instantly
"bricks" which causes him to run to Buds to get the system repaired.
The cost of the repairs will be substantial, so to raise the money for the
needed parts and labor Strong Bad decides to hold a battle of the bands. In
order to pull off this task of massive awesomeness, you need to find bands and
celebrity judges. While this task might sound like fun, it becomes a very lack
luster event. Getting the band together isn't as easy as it could have been and
slows the game down to a snail’s pace for most of the game. Once the game picks
up it’s still OK, but it’s just too similar to last two games. ![]()
As this series continues, I'm becoming disinterested in the style of game play
or the progression of Strong Bad's story in this medium. The story is funny and
plays out well, at least when it actually plays out, but it takes too long to
get the story rolling. Not only does this episode have a slow start, but it
also drags in the middle. It's looking like this is the M.O. for this series,
but that is the games style so I can fault it for being what I signed up for.
The story and over all game is just as good as the first episode, but I'm
starting to think that the series is becoming a "fan only" game. Even
with that concern, Baddest of the Bands is
the same clever story you would find with any episode, short or game from the
writers of Homestarrunner. The game may drag along, but the story is fun so
this episode gets a 7 out of 10. |
